Askja Fire and Ice

We will start by flying over the Hoffell area and farmland which are a part of Vatnajökull National park. There you will also see Hofellsjökull (glacier) that formed as an outlet of flowing water from Vatnajökull. The area is characterised by the glacier and gabro rock, which originally formed deep in the earth´s crust but is now visible because of uplift of the area and glacial erosion. Next we will see the mountain Snæfell (1833m), the highest peak in Iceland that isn’t part of a glacier and then the flight takes us over ,,Holuhraun´´. Holuhraun is a large lavafield in the Icelandic highlands just north of the Vatnajökull ice-cap. The lavafield was created by fissure eruptions and used to be called Kvíslarhraun but the name was changed in 1884 to Holuhraun by the geologist and geographer Þorvaldur Thoroddsen. On the 29th of August 2014 a volcanic eruption began and produced a lava field of more than 85km² (33 sq mi), the largest in Iceland since 1783. Our flight will then take us to see ,,Askja´´, a caldera in Dyngjufjöll mountains on the northern side of Vatnajökull National park. Askja is a 50 square kilometers subsidence cauldron formed when a lava chamber just under the surface of the earth emptied in a volcanic eruption and the roof above it collapsed. In fact, Askja consists of three interlinked cauldrons, which makes it the best subsidence cauldron example in Iceland. On our way back we will fly over the Vatnajökull Glacier and take a look at the Glacier Lagoon ,,Jökulsárlón´´. Jökulsárlón is a still lagoon with blue water which is dotted with icebergs from the surrounding Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier. The Glacier Lagoon flows through a short waterway into the Atlantic Ocean, leaving chunks of ice on a black sand beach. In winter, the fish-filled lagoon hosts hundreds of seals.
